Our Children, Our Kindergartners: Examining the School Readiness of Monterey County’s Children

First 5 Monterey County launches new program to help young children prepare for school
(Salinas)- As school children across the county start a new school year, results from a recent study of incoming kindergarteners found several factors that help smooth the transition to the classroom. Results of First 5 Monterey County's 2009-2010 Kindergarten Readiness Assessment discovered that early and frequent home-school connections, daily reading, and early socialization with peers are important factors that help young children have an easier adjustment to kindergarten. On the heels of the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment findings, First 5 Monterey County recently launched the Transition to Kindergarten Project, which focuses on improving the ease of kindergarten transition for children in 16 schools located in East Salinas, Seaside, and King City.
