FIRST 5 rescues child care for working families

The FIRST 5 Santa Clara County Commission approved no interest bridge loans to local child care providers that care for children of working families in California’s welfare to work program. The loans provided by FIRST 5 will ensure 1,270 Santa Clara County children in the CalWORKs Stage 3 program remain in high quality child care.

With its pledge of funding, FIRST 5 becomes the first local commission to fill the day care funding gap that was created when Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed $256 million for the CalWORKs Stage 3 child care program. This veto eliminated child care coverage for 55,000 California children.
