Child Development

Child Development
The 4C Council encourages all family child care providers to continue their professional development through ongoing training and education in the field of child development. This training can be gained in a variety of ways:

  • Workshops
  • Seminars
  • College coursework
  • Adult education programs
  • Relevant books and videos

As you embark on your new career as a child care provider, your focus must be on the individual growth and development of the child. It is important to remember that:

  • All children learn at different rates of development, even those children of the same age.
  • You need to have realistic expectations for each child and support their feeling of self-worth.
  • Children learn through play, action and interaction, in an environment that provides for self-discovery and language development.
  • The most important components of quality child care are respect, kindness, active listening, ongoing communication, and loving each other. This builds a partnership with you and the parent that assists and reinforces the child's strengths and needs.

Books and videos that address child development are available at the 4C Council Resource Library.
